East Harlem Community Board To Review Three Major Real Estate Developments

March 8, 2017

Land use applications for three major East Harlem development projects will be reviewed Wednesday by the Community Board 11 land use, landmarks and planning committee.

The committee will be analyzing applications for two block-swallowing mixed-use developments on East 96th Street between First and Second avenues and on East 126th Street between First and Second avenues. The third development is a proposal brought by the city Department of Sanitation to build a new garage on East 99th Street between First and Second avenues.

The two mixed-development projects may interest residents more because they both involve new residential construction.

The East 96th Street development — proposed by the Educational Construction Fund — will contain three schools, a brand new playground, 20,000 square feet of retail space and a 68-story residential tower with around 1,100 apartments, according to a Community Board presentation. The site is currently home to COOP Tech, The Heritage School and Park East High School.

The East 126th Street development site will include “a mix of permanently affordable and middle income residential, commercial, and community facility uses,” according to the project’s applicant — the city Economic Development Corporation. The site is currently home to a bus depot and recently archeologists discovered that it is the site of an african burial ground. The EDC has pledged to build a memorial to the burial ground in the new development.

The meeting is open to the public and will be held at the Bonifacio Senior Center on E 116th St between Madison and Fifth avenues. The meeting will start at 6 p.m. and is expected to last an hour, according to the Community Board calendar.
