Each year, twice a year, New York Fashion Week serves -an exciting time for the city of New York. Fashionistas and fashiongents come from near and far to view the upcoming seasons projected fashions. Fashion Week is a celebratory time of year where those who love and follow fashion look to attend a number of shows and events in anticipation of possibly socializing with haute couture and prêt-à-porter royalty!
Such royalty includes gifted haute couture designer Adrian Alicea. For those of you unfamiliar with Alicea, he is a former high fashion model who’s walked the runway for designers such as Thierry Mugler, Giorgio Armani, and Jean-Paul Gaultier.
A little over ten years ago Alicea teamed up with business partner Nico Urquiza to form the famed House of Nico & Adrian New York. During this time Adrian & Nico developed fashion forward designs under the Adrian & Nico brand. More recently, Adrian has focused his creative energies on the progression of the Adrian Alicea Haute Couture Collection. The Adrian Alicea Haute Couture collection celebrates his unique artistry while paying homage to his Latino and Taino Indian roots. Adrian notes, he is inspired by his desire to have “everyone who wears my designs to feel special, to feel proud, and to know that they are different and that they have the right to be,” (adrianalicea.com).
The spring/summer 2014 “Monseratè” collection presented during Mercedes Benz Fashion week offered attendees a pulsating mix of apparel and accessories. Monseratè Alicea’s inspiration, is a beautiful island located in the Caribbean islands of Lesser Antilles. The picturesque island provided for an organic color palette comprised of greens, nudes, tangerines, blues and splashes of yellow. The color story gave way to each designs’ individuality while remaining connected to the overall design inspiration.
The show kicked off with a pulsating soundtrack of drums as the models gave the crowd their most fierce catwalks! As a designer, it is clear Alicea is not afraid to take his artistry to the next level. The black and white off the shoulder design above is a mere sample of his creativity and innovative design aesthetic. By shows’ end, the music score began to slow down to intimate, soft melody. As such, each model moved down the runway in a fluid, rhythmic motion. It was truly a beautiful visual presentation of artistic design.
There is no way I can close without sharing my favorite Adrian Alicea designs! I’m ecstatic about the celosia orange multi-print dress and the placid blue lace bikini. The dress a multi-colored floral print front was paired with a solid dark blue back. The mixture of contrasting hues served as a lively interpretation of the beauty of Monseratè. I also fell in love with the femininity of the lingerie inspired swimwear. I found the placid blue lace two-piece trimmed in the multi-print orange fabric super sexy! The two-piece offered a great interpretation of collision and contrast.
The show closed with the models returning to the runway in a unified circle. The crowd stood to their feet and roared with applause! The Adrian Alicea S/S ‘14 show was a huge success! Remember my fellow fashionistas and fashiongents, no matter how you pair your spring 2014 fashions , “Fashion is what YOU make it”!
