A Note From Harlemite Luci Ortiz Who Ran For Kids In The ING NYC Marathon 2011

November 6, 2011

Harlem World Magazine was media sponsor of Harlemite Luci Ortiz’s run in this years 2011 ING NYC Marathon. This was our first time participating in the venture, and hopefully not our last, but it was made very easy with our partnership with Luci Ortiz.

Here’s a note from Luci discussing her experience:

Hello Harlem World Magazine,

We did it! Sunday November 6, 2011 I had the pleasure of running and finishing the world’s greatest marathon in a time of 5:58:53.

Collectively, as of today we raised $3,515.00 and more than $4.2 million as a TFK group in support of New York Road Runners’ youth programs—funds that will allow Team for Kids to serve more children than ever before in the year ahead.

We were part of a record-breaking weekend, in so many ways. More than 47,000 runners. A stunning $34 million raised for various charities. Mutai’s 2:05:05 in New York is now the fastest performance on a record-certified course in the United States. In fact, the top three men as well as the women’s wheelchair champion beat course records.

I have many fond memories that will stay with me forever. Encouraging and funny signs that read “pain is temporary, pride is forever” “run like you stole something” “hurry up I’m cold”. Many children giving high fives and offering free hugs. One in particular moment that stands out was a wheel chair participant, he was pushing himself up backwards on the 59th street bridge, he had a clear view of all the runners approaching his direction as he pushed with his feet, he then starts yelling “Lucy, Lucy, go, go” very loud and swinging his hands in the air. This assisted wheelchair participant was encouraging me while he struggled to push himself to cross the bridge. I ran to him and gave him a high five, grabbed his hand and encouraged him as well, we smiled so big and just laughed. It was awesome!

The entire experience was remarkable. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.

Thank you,

Lucy
