Affordable_NY_hero from harlem to holliThese days, when New Yorkers of all stripes are having a hard time finding a place to live that fits in their budgets, the City Museum is shining a lens on the City’s long history of affordable housing activism from Harlem to Hollis.
Housing now demands a growing share of our incomes. In the New York area, the housing affordability problem extends far up the income ladder. Since the city is so densely populated and new construction so expensive, even middle-income professionals struggle to pay their rent or mortgage.

Affordable New York explores the remarkable efforts of committed citizens to design, construct, and manage affordable housing, and documents the ways in which reformers, policy makers, and activists have fought to transform their city.
