African Singer Somi’s ‘Petite Afrique,’ Dedicated To Harlem At The Schomburg

May 5, 2017

East African singer-songwriter Somi returns to the Neighborhood Concert series with her blend of jazz and African music. Somi has been praised for being “serious and seductive” (The New York Times), and her 2014 album, The Lagos Music Salon, reached number one on Billboard‘s jazz chart. Her new album, Petite Afrique, is a song cycle dedicated to the gentrification of Harlem’s African immigrant community—her most political work to date. She has collaborated with a wide range of artists, from Common to Hugh Masekela, and is a dedicated activist and founder of the nonprofit organization New Africa Live.

Watch the concert LIVE on the ABC website.
