Alexander Wang Comes To Harlem For NYC Fashion Week 2017

February 9, 2017

Famed designer Alexander Wang is taking his NYC Fashion Week showcase uptown. An invitation to the event, snagged by fashion magazine Vogue, was short on details but did list an address: 146th Street and Broadway in Harlem, New York.

The mysterious invited led Vogue editors to ponder numerous structures in and around the intersection, including a Key Food, the Apollo Pharmacy and even the middle of the street. But one option stood out to Vogue, the abandoned RKO Hamilton Theater.

The former RKO Hamilton Theater was built in 1913 and designed by architect Thomas W. Lamb, according to the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC). Originally the theater was intended to host Vaudeville acts, one of the most popular forms of theater at the time in the United States, but by 1928 the building was bought by Radio-Keith-Orpheum and it was converted into one of the first movie theaters in the city.

The theater showed its final screening in 1958 and for a time it was used as a sports venue, disco and church, according to the LPC.

The RKO Hamilton Theater was designated an individual landmark in February of 2000, according to the LPC.
