The annual Harlem Book Fair is one of the best book fairs in the national, its grown to a show on C-SPAN and free to over 500,000 folks in attendance, each Summer during the third Saturday in July on 135th Street (bet., Frederick Douglass Blvd. and 5th Avenue). Tip: check out the vendors, they always have good food and great deals on books.
Also, Harlem hosts one of the oldest book clubs in the world, the Harlem Writer’s Guild founded in 1950 with members like Maya Angelou, Rosa Guy, John Oliver Killens, Dr. John Henrik Clarke, Willard Moore, Walter Christmas, James Baldwin and other were members. HWG is still going strong as they hold there monthly meetings at the Schomburg Center for Research.
Harlem is home to some of the best book e-tailers in Harlem and internationally like the African-American Literary Books Club (AALBC), Mosaic Books and Hue-Man books. Each book site has the their own niche connecting with their audience online and in the case of Mosaic Books and HueMan books connecting at signing and launch events throughout the year.
