B.P. Brewer Welcomes Applications For Millions In Capital Funding From Harlem To Houston

December 19, 2016

Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer announced her office is accepting applications for Fiscal Year 2018 city budget capital grants, and welcomed organizations and institutions interested in capital funding to contact her office for more information or apply online. Applications for public entities including schools, parks, libraries, hospitals, and CUNY or SUNY campuses are accepted through the Borough President’s online grants portal; other nonprofit organizations can find out how to apply at the city’s CapGrants application page. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, February 14.

“Whether we’re building new libraries at our public schools or installing a new dock so New Yorkers can go kayaking for free at Governor’s Island, these capital awards strengthen our borough and our city, and improve people’s lives,” said Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer. “I encourage every eligible school and local institution to bring good ideas to my team and see if a city capital grant can help make those ideas a reality.”

Under the City Charter, each of the five borough presidents can direct the allocation of a portion of the city’s capital budget to invest in the infrastructure of their borough’s schools, public facilities, nonprofit organizations and cultural institutions. City capital grants fund investments in infrastructure, such as facilities improvements or major equipment purchases with a useful life of more than five years.

In the FY 2017 City Budget, Brewer’s office awarded $26 million in Manhattan capital projects, including improvements and purchases for 110 public schools, 37 cultural institutions, 7 CUNY and SUNY campuses, 11 public parks, and more. As part of this slate of grants, Brewer committed $2 million to investments in hydroponics, gardening, and urban farming, building on her office’s report and subsequent conference on urban agriculture programs in the city. A full list of FY 2017 awards is available here.

Prospective applicants are urged to learn more about the capital grant program, its application process, and its eligibility requirements at the Borough President’s web site, and are strongly encouraged to meet with the Borough President’s budget team to discuss proposals.

The Borough President’s office will accept applications through the Tuesday, February 14th, 2016 deadline. Capital funding recipients will be selected by the Borough President’s office for inclusion in the city budget after a thorough review of all applications, and are subject to review by city agencies and the city’s Office of Management and Budget.

Representatives of organizations interested in learning more or applying for capital funding are asked to schedule a meeting with the Borough President’s Office. Meeting requests should be directed to budget@manhattanbp.nyc.gov.
