Billie Holiday’s Upper West Side Home For $12.95M

October 26, 2015

200381497NY Curbed reports that you don’t have to be able to sing your heart out to own the former Upper West Side home of jazz great Harlem fave Billie Holiday, but you will need more than twice as much as you would have six years ago.

20038146726 West 87th Street, sitting less than a block west of Central Park, has six floors (if you include the garden and basement levels). Holiday, known to many as “Lady Day,” made this her residence until her untimely death at age 44. (She actually died at Metropolitan Hospital on the East Side.)

200381632There are whopping seven bedrooms, six full bathroom, and two powder rooms. The L-shaped stoop, impressive enough with its two landings, will do an owner one better because it is heated. That means less shoveling in the winter. Original details remain, including plaster moldings, wood paneling, a grand staircase, and fireplace mantels. New windows, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC have brought this mansion into the 21st century. It can all be yours for $12.95 million, a big increase since its sale in 2009 for $5.85 million (what will it be in 2020).
