Manhattan Gale A. Brewer will be registering voters this Saturday, August 26, 2017, to commemorate the 97th anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which guaranteed women the right to vote in the United States.
This anniversary holds special significance this year for New York, as this coming November will mark the 100th anniversary of the referendum that added women’s suffrage to the New York State Constitution.
“The right to vote was a beginning, not an end, to the struggle for equality for all women,” said Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer. “With the ugly assault on women that’s resurfaced in national politics, it’s more important than ever that we celebrate our victories a century ago not just by remembering them, but by building on them. That starts with registering and empowering voters, and reminding everyone this work is not done.”

More women than men have voted in every presidential election since 1964, and a higher proportion of eligible women than men have voted in every presidential election since 1980. Yet more needs to be done: women’s representation in legislative bodies and other high government offices has remained stubbornly low, and progress on a range of key issues from equal pay to reproductive rights has stagnated or even suffered setbacks.
Women hold fewer than 20 percent of seats in the U.S. House and Senate, fewer than a quarter of the country’s statewide elected offices, and fewer than a quarter of the seats in state legislatures. Even in New York’s own City Council, the number of women who are members has dropped from 18 in 2009 to just 13 today, and a campaign backed by outgoing Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito is underway to reverse that trend.
