IMG_8019Angelica Calderon, a junior at St. Jean Baptiste High School on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, will have an opportunity of a lifetime.

The Bronx resident, who has a strong passion for photography, has been selected to have her own photographs on display at the Studio Museum in Harlem next month.

Calderon was recently selected to participate in one of the museum’s programs called Expanding the Walls: Making Connections Between Photography, History and Community. The eight-month photography-based program is offered to a select group of students enrolled in a high school or GED program. The program includes a regimen of art workshops, discussion groups and field excursions and teaches the basics of digital photography. In April, Calderon spoke at the museum’s spring luncheon and was later asked to present some of her work at the museum.

The Studio Museum in Harlem was founded in 1968 by a diverse group of artists, community activists and philanthropists who envisioned a new kind of museum that not only displays artwork but also supports artists and arts education. Today, the museum is the nexus for artists of African descent locally, nationally and internationally and for work that has been inspired and influenced by black culture. It is a site for the dynamic exchange of ideas about art and society.

“This is a great stepping stone for Angelica. She will now have the opportunity to show her photography to a wider audience. We couldn’t be more proud of her,” said Sister Maria Cassano, Principal of St. Jean Baptiste High School, an all-girls Catholic School. “We look forward to seeing her work at the Studio Museum of Harlem in July.”

Calderon is a member of the art club and the Chutney Dance Team at St. Jean Baptiste High School.

St. Jean Baptiste High School is located at 173 East 75th Street in Manhattan. For more information about the school, visitwww.stjean.org or call (212) 288-1645.
