You Can Take The A Train To Harlem In New Cars Soon

a train harlemThe NY Daily News reports that G train riders will have to wait for the L train’s planned shutdown before getting better service, some Harlem line trains get new model cars.

In a July 22 letter, NYC Transit chief Ronnie Hakim rebuffed a request from Assemblyman Joe Lentol (D-Brooklyn) to add more service and make the notoriously short G train longer, to accommodate more straphangers.

Hakim wrote that rush hour service is fine the way it is, meeting guidelines for how cramped subway cars can get.

The MTA doesn’t have spare trains for the G line until it gets a new order of cars running by 2018, Hakim also claimed.

The G train is due for a service boost in 2019 to help displaced L train commuters get around the city when the MTA will close the popular line’s Canarsie Tunnel for 18 months of repair work.

Lentol, however, did not buy the MTA’s line about rush hour crowding on the G train.

“While the MTA says the G line is within ridership load guidelines, there is no doubt that anyone you speak with who rides the G train during rush hour would disagree,” he said. “Breathing down people’s necks on the G during rush hour is the rule, not the exception.

MTA spokeswoman Beth DeFalco said the new model cars will be assigned to the A, C and J/Z lines, where ridership is higher than the G train.

“G has the lowest overall ridership of any line,” she said.
