Walter’s World: Apollo Amateur Night Winners Go To London

Before there was American Idol, America’s Got Talent or So You It You Can Dance there was the original talent showcase- Apollo Amateur Night. Since introducing the first Amateur Night contest in 1934 the Apollo Theater has played a major role in launching the careers of some of the world’s most recognized and renowned artists.  On Wednesday May 23 the Apollo Theater continued this legacy when it presented Amateur Night: Apollo Goes to London Semifinals. The event is part of a new partnership with London’s Hackney Empire Theater for the first transatlantic Amateur Night competition.
The competition is set to coincide with the 2012 Summer Olympics, which will also be held in London. Continue reading

The Apollo Theater, one of the nation’s greatest cultural treasures, has announced that it will induct Stevie Wonder into its Apollo Legends Hall of Fame at its annual Spring Gala on Monday, June 13, 2011. The Gala Benefit Concert and Awards Ceremony brings together the best and brightest in business and entertainment to raise funds in support of the non-profit theater’s remarkable legacy and its current initiatives for emerging artists and community and educational programs in New York City and beyond. The Apollo theater; Harlem, recently honored two of musics greatest, Michael Jackson and Aretha Franklin.  These two pioneers and international icons, were honored and recognized for their hard work and steadfast love to the art of music with a bronze plate plaque fixed eternally at the entrance leading into the Apollo.   Continue reading
