On Tuesday, June 29th, 6pm – 9pm, Haiti Is Me (H.I.M.) will host its campaign launch event at the KiptonART Access Space located at 75 Wall Street. The campaign born after the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti on January 10, 2010 is aimed at raising awareness and continued support for Haiti relief efforts through social media, events and strategic partnerships.  H.I.M. has teamed up with The Global Syndicate and KiptonART to produce the event founded by Calcie Cooper (Co-Founder of The JI Group). Salters Scene: March of Dimes 35th Annual Beauty Ball

On March 11, 2010, the March of Dimes 35th Annual Beauty Ball was held at the upscale Cipriani 42nd Street.  The one and only Wendy Williams of The Wendy Williams Show was the host for this wonderful event, which has raised more than $32 million, over the past 34 years, to benefit the March of Dimes New York Division in support of the Prematurely Awareness Campaign.

The honorees for the evening were the Executive Vice President of Sales Promotion, Marketing and E-Commerce for Belk, Inc. who received the Retailer of the Year Award and Neil J. Katz, of Parlux Fragrances, Inc. who received the Beautiful Apple Award.

Gabriela Casella, who attended the Beauty Ball, has benefited from the March of Dimes’ efforts in the “regionalization of Neonatal Intensive Care Units” (NICUs).  When Gabriela was born on December 25, 1998, she weighed 2 pounds and 4 ounces.  For two months, Gabriela stayed in a NICU where she received crucial help close to home.

Haiti is still experiencing after shocks days after the devastating earthquake.  It is clear that it will take a sustained global effort to help Haiti recover.

A group of NYC professionals put together a successful fundraiser Wednesday night at Arena in Mid-town Manhattan. This party for a cause featured the DJ talents of DJs Clue, D-Nice, Franky, Jon Quick, Kiss, Mick Boggie, M.O.S., Ted Smooth & Tony Touch.   Hearts 4 Haiti partnered with Doctors Without Borders and YELE Haiti.  All monetary proceeds generated from the event will be donated to Doctors Without Borders with a designation to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Effort.  All food, clothing and supplies will be given to YELE Haiti.   Continue reading

Saturday October 17th, Black Girls Rock Inc., a nonprofit youth empowerment mentoring organization established for young women of color, held it’s 4th annual BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Awards at the sleek New York Times Center.  Handling the hosting duties this year were actresses Regina King and Tracee Ellis Ross.

This year’s honorees and their awards were: Mary J. Blige-the BLACK GIRLS ROCK! “Icon” Award, Queen Latifah-the “Rock Star” Award, Raven-Symoné-the “Young, Gifted, and Black” Award, Naomi Campbell-the “Fashionista” Award, Janelle Monáe-the “Who’s Got Next” Award, Dr. Sonia Sanchez-the “Living Legend” Award, Truthaids founder, activist and White House Fellow, Dr. Mehret Mandefro-the “Community Service” Award, DJ Spinderella-the “Jazzy Joyce DJ” Award, Iyanla Vanzant received the “Shot Caller” Award and Anthony Hamilton, who received the only award given to a man, the “Soul Brother #1″ Award.

When accepting her award, Iyanla Vanzant, passionately talked about her rise from a challenging position in her life, ‘I was Black, in the projects, on welfare, without a high school diploma (and) 38 years later I stand here to receive the Black Girls Rocks Award with my son who is 38 years old!”

 

Besides honoring these great Black women (and man) who rock, there was a performance by Melaine Fiona, and a silent auction featuring a Phil Collen’s guitar, art work by Artists of America as well as jewelry and a dress from designer Catherine Malandrino.

Labor Day weekend saw much partying going on in Brooklyn.  But there was much partying going on in Manhattan too.  At the upscale restaurant/lounge Pranna,  Black Light Entertainment, The League and sponsor Ty-Ku came together to celebrate the launch of apparel line Global Recess “Fashion for Humanity.”

 

Model Emarie Wiltz of reality TV show Project Runway and Models of the Runway is the powerhouse behind Global Recess.  Due to things she saw during her international travels, Emarie was compelled to find a way to help improve some bad situations: HUMAN TRAFFICKING, MILITARY USE OF CHILDREN and POVERTY

Pranna was packed inside and there was a huge line outside trying to get in.  DJ Moma and DJ L from BET’s Network’s 106 and Park were on the 1s and 2s providing the hot tunes for a hot party!
