Salters Scene: NYC Fashion Week Re-cap

Chico Debarge

Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010 kicked off with Fashion Night Out on Thursday September 10th.  Fashion Night Out gave retailers around the city a reason to extend their normal business hours in the name of fashion.  The idea was to create a buzz going into Fashion Week.  Entertainers, fashion designers, socialites and fashionatisas scurried about the city.

Music and Electronics store J&R Music World in downtown Manhattan, got in on the fashion bandwagon.  Model Carol Alt signed copies of her books Model, Inc and This Year’s Model upstairs, while Chico Debarge sang songs from his latest CD Addiction downstairs.    Continue reading

Salters Scene: JRG Bikini Under the Bridge 2009

The folks at JRG did it again.  On August 15, the Bikini Under the Bridge fashion show was held in Brooklyn at the Tobacco Warehouse. The two show extravaganza featured returning swimwear lines as well as new ones:  Ashakai, Trefle Designs, Yard Rock, Chila for Fun, Shar Styles, Brazilian Bezel, TBA Clothing, Royal Flush, Sammy B, Steven Daniels, Bernard Moore and Derek Moore.

Returning TBA (To Be Afrikan) Clothing swimwear designs known for being more edgy, were a tad bit toned down this year.    William Fleet, the designer, tried to take into account some of the feedback he had received and trends on the horizon. On the rookie side, Bikini Under Bridge designer Shar of Shar Style is actually fresh to the designing game.  Shar from Guyana, living in Florida, has worked as a model for some time, so the designing bug has been in her for a while.  However, it was only a short six months ago when Shar threw her cards on the table and delved into world of fashion design.  She wanted Shar Styles to exude the sexiness of South Beach Miami.

JRG who in the past had models from America’s Next Top Model, switched gears this time around with male model Sandhurst from the reality show Make Me A Super Model

In between shows we caught up with WBLS Caribbean Fever’s radio show host Daved Levy, who was backstage conversing with one of the Bikini Under the Bridge models.

Salters Scene: Summer Stage-Batiste, Spalding and Ledisi

Jonathan Batiste

It was a perfect afternoon in Central Park on Sunday! Hot, sunny, no rain with talented artists scheduled to perform at Central Park’s Summerstage: Jonathan Batiste, Esperanza Spalding and Ledisi

Honoring the King of Pop Michael Jackson, Jazz Pianist Batiste took the stage wearing a Michael Jackson T-shirt.  Midway through his set, the Batiste led band broke down a Curtis Mayfield song into Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean.

Esperanza Spalding

Spalding followed Batiste and raised the energy level at Summerstage.  This firecracker rocked the upright bass, the electric bass and sang her tail off.  After playing nearly an hour, Spalding and her band left the stage.  However, an overwhelming roar from the audience guided Spalding and crew back.  Before performing one more tune, Spalding instructed the audience to participate because that’s the only way she could continue on with her feet hurting.

Closing out this lovely afternoon, was the two-time Grammy nominated R&B singer Ledisi.  From the moment she sang the first note and that soulful sound came pushing through the speakers, it was on! Although Ledisi playful said she was leaving the stage a couple of times because the crowd was not with her, clearly she knows New York City loves some Ledisi.

This wonderful night would not be complete without beginning on the red carpet.  And there is nothing like the red carpet in Harlem in front of the Apollo on 125th street.

Harlem was out in full force to see the big names walk the carpet and they were not disappointed.  The crowd went crazy when the triple threat himself, Jamie Foxx stepped out of the limo.  “We love you Jaime” could be heard down the block.  Always a crowd pleaser, Jamie posed for various fan photos, before moving on to the press for interviews.  Other crowd favorites on red carpet were Patti LaBelle, Bill and Camille, Quincy Jones, Gayle King, the View’s Sherri Shepherd, Harlemite Dougie Fresh and of course Mariah Carey.

Author Michael Eric Dyson dissects the relation between the gay rights movement and the civil rights movement. “Many African-American people forget that the civil rights movement itself was borrowed,” says Dyson. “Pay some royalties to Mahatma Gandhi, because that’s where King got it.”

William Spaceman Patterson, Afua Richardson and Melvin Van Peebles

This wonderful night of discussion, performance and mingling was hosted by Derek Lee McPhatter, Harlem resident and co-author of the performance piece It Goes Unsaid.  The event began with an engaging conversation with three of the Salon Series artists: the legendary Melvin Van Peebles creator of Sweet Sweetback’s Badasssss Song, dynamic spoken-word artist Jessica Care Moore and electro-jazz cellist/composer Dana Leong.  Greg Tate, founding member of the Black Rock Coalition and staff writer at the Village Voice, did great job guiding the conversation as the moderator. What, Black News Channel?
