In celebration of the 75th year, the Apollo held a gala benefit tribute concert and awards ceremony mondy night. Music man Quincy Jones and the diva Patti LaBelle were inducted into the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame. An honor definitely earned by these two entertainment giants.
Comedian, actor and champion of the community Bill Cosby and Camille Cosby were awarded the Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis Arts & Humanitarian Award.
This wonderful night would not be complete without beginning on the red carpet. And there is nothing like the red carpet in Harlem in front of the Apollo on 125th street.
Harlem was out in full force to see the big names walk the carpet and they were not disappointed. The crowd went crazy when the triple threat himself, Jamie Foxx stepped out of the limo. “We love you Jaime” could be heard down the block. Always a crowd pleaser, Jamie posed for various fan photos, before moving on to the press for interviews. Other crowd favorites on red carpet were Patti LaBelle, Bill and Camille, Quincy Jones, Gayle King, the View’s Sherri Shepherd, Harlemite Dougie Fresh and of course Mariah Carey.

On Sunday May 31, 2009, The Harlem Education Guild held its First Annual Career Fair at the Frederick Douglass Academy. Students from the school and the community were introduced to professionals from various backgrounds.
Dr. Gregory Hodge, Principal of Frederick Douglass Academy, opened up the morning long program by welcoming the students and professionals. The microphone was soon turned over to the keynote speaker of the day: City College graduate Dr. Cliff Jernigan, Associate Dean of the School of Communication of Hofstra University. Students then broke into small groups based on their career of interests.
Having a large number of professionals volunteer their time to share their experiences with the students, helped create an environment where the students were really engaged. Harlemite Elroy, who is on the brink of completing his
bachelor’s degree, had some one on one time with Yvette Searcy, manager in sales at Kensington Books. One of the points Yvette stressed, was the importance of being diligent about using the huge amount of free information available online when doing career oriented research.
