Celebrate Ossie Davis 100: A Centennial Celebration Of The Author, Actor, Activist

February 15, 2018

Today, when we look for inspiring Black voices, we often look to Hollywood power couples like Courtney B. Vance & Angela Bassett, DeVon Franklin & Megan Goode, Will Smith & Jada Pinkett-Smith. If we’re searching for consciousness, we look to the commitment of Alicia Keys, Jesse Williams, Colin Kaepernick, and Angela Rye. For absolute brilliance, style, and grace we look no further than Barack & Michelle Obama. As a power couple with consciousness and grace, Ossie Davis & Ruby Dee were champions for human rights and advocates for the arts. Both were iconic public figures of their time–whether it was on a Broadway stage, the big screen, or at a rally for civil rights, this dynamic duo remained engaged and committed to effect change.

In 1998, after 50 years of marriage, Ossie & Ruby penned a rich joint autobiography titled With Ossie and Ruby: In This Life Together. The book shares their lessons learned as a couple as well as their secrets to balancing unwavering love with personal artistry, family, perspectives on the struggles within Black communities, and political/social activism. In 2006, the audio version was recognized by the Recording Academy with a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album. In Ossie & Ruby’s own voices, each word offers the listener an honest account of their lives together and a timeless message of unity, purpose, and perseverance.

Each February we reflect on Black historic figures, both past and present, who leave us inspired and warm our hearts.

Listening to With Ossie & Ruby: In This Life Together provides both.

Amazon.com states: “With Ossie and Ruby overflows with consummate storytelling skill developed by decades in the spotlight. From their early years as struggling actors in Harlem’s black theater to Broadway and Hollywood stardom, they regale the reader with colorful, entertaining tales of the places they’ve been and the people they’ve met. Born into the struggle, their characters were shaped by the dynamic collisions of life, politics, and art; and from those experiences, they achieved some sense of their worth as married people, friends, and lovers.”

With Ossie and Ruby: In This Life Together reveals real-life challenges and serves to inspire those looking for love and how to preserve it.
