June 1, 2016

studio museum in harlem“… it was a museum that had a really serious sense of its destiny. It knew then that it was going to become a major fine arts museum. It was as sure as the sun comes up in the morning.”  —Dr. Mary Schmidt Campbell

Forty-eight years ago, The Studio Museum in Harlem was founded in a rented second floor loft on Fifth Avenue and 125th Street. So much has changed since then; however, one thing remains the same: our absolute dedication to championing artists of African descent. —Thelma Golden, Director and Chief Curator
