Citi Bike’s Harlem Expansion Will kick Off Next Week

September 6, 2017

NY Curbed reports that in just a week from now, Citi Bike’s planned expansion in Harlem will officially get underway. Part of this expansion will also see the addition of stops and bikes in Astoria, Long Island City, Prospect Heights, and Crown Heights.

In all, Citi Bike will add 140 new stations and 2,000 new bikes across three boroughs, in this particular expansion. In Harlem, the bike share program will expand from its existing stations up to 130th Street.

“With this round of Citi Bike expansion, bike share will now cover more than 30 square miles, with more New Yorkers able to take advantage of this fast, affordable, convenient and sustainable transportation option,” Polly Trottenberg, the commissioner of the city’s Department of Transportation, said in a statement. “More than just adding neighborhoods to the bike share network, Citi Bike is also bringing more bikes and stations to already established neighborhoods.”

In Long Island City, Citi Bike is adding seven new stations to the existing network. Since its launch in 2013, Citi Bike has broken ridership records every year with 14 million rides taken in 2016. This past June, the service witnessed more than 70,000 rides in a single day, for the first time ever.

At present, Citi Bike has 10,000 bikes at over 600 stations, and it is looking to have 12,000 bikes by the end of the year. Work on this latest expansion will begin on September 12, 2017.
