City College students hit with riot charges

November 19, 2013

City College, NYCTwo City College students were hit with riot charges Monday for leading last month’s storming of a controversial campus student center that had been reclaimed by the administration, sources told The Post.

“Come on in! Come on in!” students Khalil Vasquez, 22, and Tafadar Sorov, 19, were allegedly caught on tape shouting before dozens of students forced their way into the Guillermo Morales/Assata Shakur Student and Community Center at the Upper Manhattan campus’s North Academic Center on Oct. 24.

A few days earlier, the college had closed down the center — named after Morales, an infamous Puerto Rican nationalist bomber, and Black Panther Shakur, a k a Joanne Chesimard, who killed a state trooper — saying it simply needed the space.

The small center had been a sore point with the school for years because of its name. Students said the move to reclaim it was nothing short of an attempt to finally rid the administration of a decades-long embarrassment.

The students said they had been given the space as part of a settlement over a tuition-hike protest back in 1989.

Sourov, who is from The Bronx, and Vasquez of Manhattan were already suspended by CCNY for their alleged involvement in the protest and could face expulsion, a source said.

They face the riot rap as well as charges of attempted assault, criminal mischief, obstructing governmental administration and harassment, sources said.

A female campus cop suffered a knee and arm injury as the students rushed past her during the melee, but she declined medical attention.

Neither student could be reached for comment.

A City College spokeswoman did not return a phone call or e-mail seeking comment.
