Community Forum On Opioids In East Harlem

April 19, 2018

The NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan Community Advisory Board will host a community forum on Saturday, April 21, 2018, to focus on opioid use in East Harlem. Guest speakers will include local elected officials and Dr. Ronnie Swift, Chief of Psychiatry at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan at Silberman School of Social Work, 2180 Third Avenue (at 119th Street) Manhattan. The NYC Department of Health + Mental Hygiene will provide life-saving opioid overdose prevention training and kits (Naloxone/Narcan) to community members. Representatives from local community-based organizations will provide information on addiction support services and resources in East Harlem.

East Harlem has been at the center of the opioid and substance use crisis in New York City, with the highest rate of overdose death in all of Manhattan. NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan is one of 17 NYC Health + Hospitals sites recently certified by the New York State Department of Health as a certified opioid overdose prevention program.

The event is co-sponsored by NYS Senator José M. Serrano, NYS Assemblymember Robert J. Rodriguez, NYC Comptroller Scott M. Stringer, NYC Public Advocate Letitia James, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, NYC Council Member Diana Ayala, NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene, Manhattan Community Board 11, Odyssey House, START Treatment & Recovery Centers, IPRO, and the Silberman School of Social Work, Hunter College, CUNY.
