Condo Developers Buy Harlem Church For $7.5 Million

February 5, 2017

A Harlem church plans to sell one of its buildings to a developer for $7.5 million, according to court papers.

Mount Calvary/St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, located on Edgecombe Ave. and West 137th Street, is selling a building several blocks away, on Edgecombe Ave. and West 140th Street

The deal stems from the merger of two neighboring Methodist congregations — Mount Calvary United Methodist Church and St. Mark’s Methodist Church — several years ago, Manhattan Supreme Court documents reveal.

Before the merger, Mount Calvary held services in the building on Edgecombe and W. 140th Street Since the merger, services have taken place in the St. Mark’s building on Edgecombe Avenue and West 137th Street — meaning Mount Calvary’s house of worship is rarely used, Pastor John Carrington told the Daily News.

The deal “enables the church to have money to do more service for the community, as well as for itself,” Carrington said.

The developers are expected to turn the church into condos that largely preserve the historical exterior, Carrington said.
