Congressman Charles B. Rangel was honored at the Congressional Black Associates (CBA) annual “Tribute to our Trailblazers” award ceremony on Wednesday, July 30, 3014, with the CBA Legacy Award for being one of two remaining founders of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC). This was the first time the Legacy Award was presented by the CBA, and Mr. Rangel, along with Rep. John Conyers, were the first recipients of the award.
“I am proud to see so many of you today to carry on the legacy that I, along with the twelve other founding Members of the CBC, have envisioned for ourselves to become the voice of our community through leadership and service,” said Rangel. “It is now up to you to keep empowering yourselves by supporting and learning from one another as well as cultivating the next generation of leaders.”
Throughout his entire congressional career, Rangel has played a key role in the creation and success of multicultural organizations, with the continued prosperity of the CBC serving as a testament of his hard work. Rangel received a trailblazer award in 2006, and the Legacy Award is an extraordinary step to distinguish him for his longevity and dedication.
Each year, the CBA recognizes five African American current or past employees of the House, Senate or Library of Congress who have become trailblazers in their respective fields and have served as constant role models for current and future African American staffers. This year’s recipients of the Trailblazer Award included Brandon Garrett (Chief of Staff, Rep. Robin L. Kelly), Latrice Powell (Assistant Cloakroom Manager, U.S. House of Representatives), Major Kevin Tann (Army House Liaison Division, U.S. House of Representatives), Ashley Etienne (Special assistant to the President and Cabinet Communications Director), and Paul Braithwaite (former executive director of the Congressional Black Caucus). Each of these individuals has performed tremendously within their respective fields, consistently blazing the path forward, and reaching back to bring others along.
