Constituents Rally in Support of Senator Marisol Alcántara In Inwood

May 24, 2017

Dozens of constituents rallied in support of Senator Marisol Alcántara outside of her district office Wednesday evening. Community leaders from every corner of Alcántara’s 31st Senatorial district showed up to praise the senator’s continued success both within the district and throughout the state.

The supporters bore handmade signs thanking Senator Alcántara for her efforts to bring state investment to a historically underserved community. The crowd also chanted their appreciation, shouting, “Marisol fights for us”, “Two More Years”, and “Si Se Puede” among other things. They confronted a smaller group of protestors who had come to protest her affiliation with the Independent Democratic Conference, a position which has afforded her greater influence in Albany.

Earlier this year, Senator Alcántara led the way on legislation to Raise the Age of criminal responsibility, a historic $10 million investment in legal defense funding for immigrants and record education funding for her district and other relatively low-income districts around the state. Through the budget negotiations she participated in as a member of the IDC, she also brought home unprecedented resources to district schools, parks, immigrant rights organizations, housing advocacy organizations, and other community groups.

“She fights for this community through her actions,” said tenant organizer Evangelina Fermin, “It’s easy to criticize, but we’d rather have a seat at the table, with her fighting for this community, than have her left to the side. This area has never received much attention from the government. Her office is bringing us results.”
