Cuomo Gives $7M For Harlem Homeless Project

October 19, 2017

NY Daily News reports that the supportive housing project planned for central Harlem is getting a $7.7 million assist from the state, Gov. Cuomo announced Thursday.

The money for the Center for Urban Community Services’ proposed Harlem complex is part of $17 million in homeless preventions funds awarded to projects throughout the state.

“Every New Yorker deserves a safe, decent and affordable place to live and we are building supportive housing developments across the state to help ensure the most vulnerable among us have a roof over their head and access to the services they need,” Cuomo said. “With this funding, we are investing in stronger communities to give members of the family of New York a chance at a better life.”

Plans for the Harlem project call for a 12-story, 117-unit building that will include 70 apartments for formerly homeless single adults and families. The remaining units will house low-income families and individuals.

Other projects receiving funds Thursday were located in Buffalo, Oswego County and Steuben County.

The funding is part of a 5-year, $20 billion plan to combat homelessness and build affordable housing that Cuomo unveiled two years ago and formerly launched in the spring.

It includes $10 billion to create and preserve 100,000 units of affordable housing and $10 billion to develop 6,000 supportive housing units.
