Danny Glover, MPAC, Faith And Community Leaders Host Economic Justice Day With Airbnb

December 9, 2017

Faith and community leaders from across New York City came together today for Economic Justice Day, a day-long conference organized by MPAC and sponsored by Airbnb. Speakers, including Airbnb Advisor, Actor, Producer and Humanitarian Danny Glover (pictured above), and from the National Action Network, the Harlem Business Alliance and the New York Urban League led seminars on entrepreneurship and home sharing as mechanisms for economic empowerment to combat social and economic justice issues. Members of congregations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and The Bronx participated and shared ideas and experiences.

…79 percent of NYC hosts say that hosting has helped them stay in their home, with 30 percent reporting that it has helped them avoid eviction or foreclosure.

Home sharing is a growing source of supplemental income in neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs, and Airbnb shared information on how home sharing can benefit families and communities alike. In New York, the average host earns about $5,400 annually, and shares their home an average of 4 nights a month– income that allows residents to transform their biggest expense into an asset that helps them afford to stay in the homes and communities they love. In fact, 79 percent of NYC hosts say that hosting has helped them stay in their home, with 30 percent reporting that it has helped them avoid eviction or foreclosure.

Moreover, with guests spending an average of $202 per day and nearly 90 percent of Airbnb listings outside the central hotel district in Midtown, Airbnb is bringing the promise of the tourism economy to local small businesses in neighborhoods outside of the traditional tourism districts.

Airbnb enables communities traditionally underserved by the tourism industry to reap the financial rewards of travel, and helps us all work towards housing equality…

“I’ve heard stories from across the country, and especially here in New York, from people from all different backgrounds using Airbnb as a bridge to financial stability and even homeownership. The supplemental income they earn can cover expenses like food, caring for a sick relative, and education for their children– and critically, Airbnb can even be the difference between hosts having to give up their homes and earning income from them. Airbnb enables communities traditionally underserved by the tourism industry to reap the financial rewards of travel, and helps us all work towards housing equality,” said Danny Glover. “I’m proud to be here today and to be working closely with everyone at Airbnb to help more people of color benefit from home sharing.”

“Economic Justice Day is about providing our congregants with additional pathways of economic empowerment– we know how expensive it can be to live in New York, and how important it is to keep the fabric of our communities alive and whole,” said Reverend Dr. Johnnie M. Green Jr, of Mount Neboh Baptist Church. “Home sharing is one of the ways to do this in a city with soaring costs. This strengthens our communities and is true economic justice.”
