On Thursday, October 5, 2017, the de Blasio Administration, Animal Care Centers of NYC and ASPCA will be hosting “City Howl,” a dog adoption event to celebrate Adopt a Shelter Dog month.

Adoption fees range from $25 to $150, and adoptions include vaccinations, spay/neuter, a pre-registered microchip, a collar, an identification tag and a certificate for a free initial exam at a participating veterinarian. Adopters must be at least 18 years old and bring a photo ID and proof of current address. New Yorkers can also stop by to learn more about foster opportunities and other ways to volunteer.

Finding adoptive homes for New York animals is more critical than ever in light of the recent hurricanes. In September, the ACC deployed several staff members to assist the ASPCA disaster response team with their hurricane relief efforts. By working diligently to find homes through adoptions for as many animals as possible from its own care centers, ACC and other partner rescue organizations will be able to help more animals from disaster areas. As part of the Animal Planning Task Force, the Office of Emergency Management will be providing disaster preparedness information at the event to encourage all New Yorkers with pets to develop their own emergency plans that ensure adequate care for their pets in the event of a disaster.

The de Blasio administration is committed to promoting animal welfare, and finding a home for all pets in need. In addition to record operating funding, Mayor de Blasio is overseeing a dramatic expansion and modernization of ACC that will support their transformative work. A full renovation of the Staten Island shelter is in progress; plans are underway for a new stand-alone adoption center next to the Manhattan Care Center, and the Mayor has committed to bringing full-service shelters to all five boroughs by building brand new, state-of-the-art shelters in the Bronx and Queens for the first time ever. ACC is the only open-admissions animal shelter serving all five boroughs, and is a leader in the nation in placement of cats and dogs, with a 93% average placement rate with adoptions to the public, through its adoption partner program, or through reunification with their families.
