Deborah Jack Artist Talk & Discussion With C. Daniel Dawson In Harlem

October 3, 2017

The Romare Bearden Foundation partners with the Harlem School of the Arts to present its Cinque Artist Program series at HSA.

Join us for three engaging presentations and discussions in the spirit and legacy of Cinque Gallery, founded by artists Romare Bearden, Norman Lewis and Ernest Crichlow in 1969. This contemporary program aims to continue the ideal of artists gathering to exchange information and resources.

First up – visual artist Deborah Jack will give a presentation on her video/sound installations, photography, paintings and text work. Then the artist will be led in conversation with photographer and curator, C. Daniel Dawson.

In her work Deborah Jack explores trans-cultural existence, memory, the effects of colonialism and mythology through re-memory. Born on the Caribbean island of St. Martin, the nature and landscape – sea, shore, and salt – have been her subject, as well as her media, through which she tells and documents the stories of her heritage.
Her work was recently included in the exhibition, The DNA of Water, at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center in Staten Island (2017). She has exhibited in solo and group shows in the Caribbean, the US, and Europe including 2014 SITE Santa Fe Biennial, Brooklyn Museum, Jersey City Museum, Western Michigan University, and El Museo del Barrio. Deborah has put together two poetry collections, The Rainy Season (1997) & Skin (2006) and has been published in The Caribbean Writer and Calabash. Deborah Jack is an Assistant Professor of Art at New Jersey City University.

C. Daniel Dawson is a photographer and founding member of Kamoinge Workshop Artists Collective. He is a curator and has taught seminars on African Spirituality in the Americas at Columbia University, University of Iowa, New York and Yale Universities.
