Custom Fuel Pizza, located at 2288 Frederick Douglass Blvd on the Southeast corner of 123rd Street, held a launch party on the evening of Tuesday, March 4th, 2014. What drew me to the party was the presence of two of the owners, former New York Knicks’ players, John Starks and Anthony Mason, Sr. Syracuse University basketball coach Jim Boeheim and CNN anchor Chris Cuomo are also investors in the business. Now the first thing that struck me when I walked in was one of the staff was serving Cobb salad to guests. For a NY pizza shop to serve salads made with mixed greens versus traditional iceberg lettuce is like huh? Then I sampled one of the pizzas and noticed that they weren’t round pizzas they were rectangular in shape; what’s going on here?
So I immediately went over and introduced myself to John Starks and struck up a conversation with him. Mr. Starks said what attached him to the venture was the healthy aspects of the business. Fresh vegetables and herbs are locally sourced when possible and are hand cut daily. All natural, antibiotic free chickens are used on the pizzas and salads. The pizza dough is made daily from unbleached flour and you can choose between three types: original, multi grain, and gluten flee. All of the sauces are made in house with 100% natural ingredients starting with the best vine ripened tomatoes. Fellow native New Yorker actor Khalil Kain, who played Maya’s husband Darnell on the sitcom “Girlfriends” even stopped by to wish his friends, some of the owners well on this venture.
You can custom make your own pizza or your salads, but from what I sampled they have come up with some very tasty combinations. I sample the Buffalo Chicken which has a nice little kick to it, the Brooklyn Bridge which is busy, but taste great, the Hawaiian which excites your hot, sweet and salty taste buds in a good way, the Veggie Delight that is all kinds of healthy and the Margherita Burrata, simple but to the point.
Their slogans are “Real Food Real Pizza Real Fast” and “Real Food: if we won’t feed it to our kids, we won’t feed it to you.” They also advertise their green practices in building out the shop with 95%of interior is reclaimed and recycled materials, and that all paper products used contain 50 – 100% recycled paper. I don’t normally go to pizza parlors, but I know I will visit Custom Fuel Pizza again to try their collectible and specialty salads, as well as their vintage and specialty pizzas. They are open seven days a week from 11am until 1am and they deliver too.
Stop by and check them out.
