Eartha Kitt The “Most Exciting Woman In The World” In Harlem

eartha kitBorn on January 17 1927 on a cotton plantation of St Matthew’s, in South Carolina, Kitt’s mother, Annie Mae Keitt.Named Eartha after the year’s good crop, she lived with Anna Mae in grinding poverty. Eartha Kitt was then sent to live with Mamie Kitt in Harlem, NY.

She was told that Mamie was her ‘aunt’, but in later life came to believe that she was in fact her biological mother.

Once called the “most exciting woman in the world” by Orson Welles, Kitt became a singer and dancer whose suggestive and sensuous performances captured the public imagination in the 1950s.

Barbara Bronx on Harlem History page on Facebook who is a cousin of Eartha Kitt’s mentioned that Ms. Kitt’s extended family in Harlem used to own Keitts Lounge on Seventh Avenuce and 125th Street near the Alhambra Ballroom in the 1960’s
