To those who have not experienced discrimination, accounts of what the experience is like might seem like an old, sad song. 2016 might seem like a new day steeped with possibilities and opportunities. One’s difficult journey might seem lost or insignificant amidst the struggles of all.

Now picture this, a film based on the book Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly. Starring Octavia Spencer, Taraji P. Henson, and Janelle Monáe, Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Glen Powell and a host of others, this film adaptation captures the pain of just how diminishing segregation and discrimination was and how damaging its effects was to all Americans. Beautiful women, possessing the most brilliant minds were sequestered and suppressed. Blocking these gifted women from opportunity was at the core of impeding NASA’s trajectory in the race to beat Russia to the moon.

Octavia Spencer’s presence in any film could warm any heart. Taraji P. Henson, my girl disappeared in the persona of Katherine G. Johnson, an incredible, noteworthy performance! Janelle Monáe, hers might have been a novice appearance among an all-star cast, but her presence was undeniable. A rambunctious spirit and her vibrant charisma ate up the screen.

This powerful movie was produced by Pharrell Williams, Donna Gigliotti, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and directed by Theodore Melfi. And to them, we owe a huge thank you.

Hidden Figures is scheduled for release Christmas Day, 2016. This has been a Harlem World Invite Event.
