Fixed Income Tenant ‘Might Have To Leave’ Harlem

After decades working in finance, Jean Covington hoped to spend her retirement in her Harlem neighborhood volunteering in the community she loves.

But now the 68-year-old is afraid she can’t afford the apartment she’s lived in for the past 41 years.

“In a few years I might have to leave New York, a community I love and put so much into,” she said. “It’s frightening.”

Covington, who has seen many close friends leave the city, is hoping the Rent Guidelines Board enacts a rent rollback when it votes later this month.

Her administrative job at a brokerage firm gave her a nice middle class life, but now that she’s on a fixed income, the rent increases have become increasingly difficult.
