Free Concert By The Association of Dominican Classical Artists In Harlem

April 3, 2017
The Association of Dominican Classical Artists presents: “Luis Días ¡ÉCHALE GAS!” The concert will be held on Thursday, April 20th at 7:00 PM at Aaron Davis Hall, Marian Anderson Theater, New York, NY 10031.

This concert was created as an interpretation of essays collected from the book “Luis Dias, ¡Echale Gas! by Miguel D. Mena. The essays guided us to the selection of songs of Luis Dias’ trajectory as an artist. Many of the political and historical events from his native country made an impact in the way he wrote music and at the same time inspired the upcoming generation of artists in the Dominican Republic. Actor Francis Mateo will interpret the chosen essays and renowned Dominican singer Maridalia Hernández will interpret the songs, originally arranged for La Camerata Washington Heights.
Luis Días is credited with being the creator of Dominican Fusion, which merged rock, jazz and blues with over 40 different ethnic rhythms from the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
For a year, between 1999 & 2000, Luis becomes the music director of Casa De La Cultura Dominicana, an organization responsible for promoting Dominican Culture in New York City. Luis also worked as a music teacher in several schools of the NYC Board of Education and continued to work as a composer, whose songs have been recorded by dozens of national and international recording artists. Luis Dias passed away in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on December 8, 2009.

The April 20th performance is FREE and open to the public, but seating is limited. Register here!

Co-sponsors: NYC Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, NYS Assemblywoman Carmen De La Rosa, City College Center for the Arts, Dominican Studies Institute, New York State Council on the Arts.
