Gavin Brown Moving New Gallery To Harlem

June 19, 2015

Gavin-Brown-2-Courtesy-Gavin-Browns-Enterprise-350x263NYTimes reports that Harlem may be far from the madding crowd of galleries in downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn. But this summer Gavin Brown is closing his Gavin Brown’s Enterprise shop on Greenwich Street in the West Village and moving his gallery to a former brewery at 461 West 126th Street.

“It’s a very dramatic space and reminds me somewhat of a cathedral — an urban secular cathedral,” said Mr. Brown.

In Harlem, he plans three floors of exhibition space, one gallery a clean white box while others will retain their raw character. Opening in late September, his inaugural exhibition will include videos by Ed Atkins, who recently joined the gallery. Will the art world make the trek?

Mr. Brown, who lives walking distance from the new space, said: “In other cities people travel to see art. I’m not so far from the Upper East Side.”
