The East Harlem building explosion on March 12 killed eight people, injured dozens and destroyed the livelihoods of many. But for one Harlem business man, the tragedy has led to a perfect sales pitch to get people to buy insurance. The Goodrich Insurance Brokerage put a sign up outside its office on a 125th Street that depicts a before- and-after scene of the buildings on Park Avenue that were destroyed in the explosion. “Get insurance, before this happens to you,” it says. “I think it’s disgusting. It’s the lowest of the low when it comes to strategies trying to drum up business,” said New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, whose office is near the explosion site. The owner should be ashamed, she said. “I’m interested in writing a letter to the business and to the insurance company, and telling them that’s not acceptable,” she said.

The owner, Frank Goodridge, was not available to comment on the ad, but another man at the company who refused to identify himself had little to say. “I have nothing to do with it,” he said, referring to the ad. The ad is not illegal, but some said Friday that it is morally reprehensible. “This is really disrespectful you know. they just taking advantage of a situation,” said neighbor Rafael Brito (source).
