Out magazine reports that Tyler Wallach, the self-described “1988 lovechild of Keith Haring and Lisa Frank,” was invited this weekend to Barneys New York to paint on luxury products for a live audience—a feat for the queer Harlem artist, who’s been a local LGBTQ mainstay for several years.
On Saturday and Sunday, Wallach took his colorful brush to everything from a Balenciaga clutch to Louboutin sneakers, adding some campy, cartoonish fun to the upscale leather goods. All products were available to purchase, with select customized pieces showcased like artwork behind glass.
The painted fashion featured multi-colored drips, graphic shapes and whimsical characters—some with rainbow teeth and silly, contagious smiles. Wallach’s work has always leaned toward positive, optimistic patterns, like a contemporary update on Haring’s street art with a queer eye for Cartoon Network.
Based in Harlem, Wallach also has his own fashion line, featuring affordable basics—tees, slip-ons and tanks—all decorated with his bold prints. If you’re unable to invest in a Wallach x Givenchy original, pictured above, you can still invest in the rising artist online.
