Last week I spent 24 hours talking to riders in all five boroughs about the challenges they face everyday in the subway system. They expressed real frustration and an eagerness to get fixes done and soon.

While the plan put forward by Chair Lhota is a good first step, the truth is we need long-term and recurring revenue to support the massive scale of work that is needed to truly fix what’s wrong with our subways.

That’s why I’m glad that our mayor is putting forward his plan to fix these issues, a plan capable of raising funds not only to undertake vital capital work and signal upgrades, but also to support something near and dear to my heart: fair fares for New Yorkers in poverty.

As everyone here knows, this was my top priority in budget negotiations and I was disappointed when we didn’t get it done. But it is truly a significant moment that today our mayor is standing firmly on the side of these struggling commuters and making this a part of his agenda as well.

A millionaires tax, or the “fair fix plan,” is a powerful statement that highlights how serious the city is about fixing the system we rely upon so heavily. Whether we move forward with this plan or the many others I have discussed in recent weeks, our top priority MUST be implementing a revenue stream we can rely on for years to come, because this is the only way we can overcome the decay our transit system has sustained over the past few decades. The millionaires Tax other initiatives should allow us to raise more permanent revenue for the MTA and together we should take the transportation system to the 21 century. Si se puede!
