Harlem Church Music Director Arrested

April 14, 2017

It was not such a good Friday for the music director of Harlem’s iconic Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, New York.

James Davis Jr., 35, the Director of Music Ministries & Fine Arts, was arrested at 1 a.m. on charges he dodged police and resisted arrest during a traffic stop after he blew through a red light, authorities said.

Davis allegedly ignored “at least five (police) commands over the loudspeaker” to pull over his Ford Mustang, and did not stop for at least two blocks after making a U-turn, according to his criminal complaint.

Davis, who had an open warrant in connection to a previous traffic-related offense, wouldn’t comply with cops as they tried to handcuff him, the complaint says.

“I am the victim of police brutality. You are violating the constitution,” Davis allegedly told the arresting cops when he was finally stopped at Macombs Pl. and W. 152nd St. in Washington Heights. “What are your shield numbers?”

Cops also found marijuana in his pocket.

Davis was charged with obstruction of governmental administration, resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance.

Davis’ lawyer, Tanya Robinson, said, “This was an unfortunate incident and I’m confident it’s going to be resolved.”

Davis was slated to appear Friday night at a Good Friday celebration at the Abyssinian Baptist Church featuring Tavis Smiley.
