The Harlem From High Bridge, NY 1905 (Photograph)

November 4, 2017

A great photograph taken on a bright morning of the High Bridge (the oldest bridge in the NYC), and looking south looking south down at the Harlem River Speedwayaka “The Speedway,” New York, 1904.

The “Speedway” was built in 1900 at a cost of over three million dollars. It’s a great view of a parade of horses “trotters and riding horses” and fashionable carriages (with not a car in sight), taken along what is now, as Bobbi Humphrey says Harlem River Drive, in the Highbridge section of historic Northern Manhattan. The view is from the Manhattan side of the river looking south. On the right is the Harlem River and on the opposite bank, is New Jersy. The High Bridge at 175th Street, is an important landmark completed in 1842 as part of the Croton aqueduct system. Beyond the High Bridge is Harlem at 125th Street.

The parkway’s ceremonial designation, 369th Harlem Hellfighters Drive, is in honor of the 369th Infantry Regiment, also known as the Harlem Hellfighters.
