Harlem Mentor And Touro College Student Chosen For Prestigious Welch Scholars Grant

July 12, 2016

Christine Choi1Christine Choi, D.O. candidate at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, has been selected to receive a 2016 Welch Scholars Grant from the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). One second-year student from each of the AOA’s member schools is eligible to receive the prestigious grant, which is awarded based on outstanding academic achievement, participation in extracurricular activities, strong commitment to osteopathic medicine and financial need.

Ms. Choi has shined in her studies and in her extracurricular activities. She serves as chief medical student at Englewood Hospital, where she provides input and support for scheduling rotations and mediating communication between doctors and students. Previously, she took a leadership role in the school’s chapter of the honor society, planning and hosting mock anatomy exams and setting up a diagnosis case study club. She also chaired the strategic planning of a student-run clinic at TouroCOM, and gave campus tours for medical school applicants.

She has also been working as a teaching assistant … mentoring high school students … after school enrichment program hosted by TouroCOM for Harlem teens interested in pursuing careers in medicine.

She has also been working as a teaching assistant in the Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Department, and mentoring high school students who attend MedAchieve, an after school enrichment program hosted by TouroCOM for Harlem teens interested in pursuing careers in medicine. During the past two years, she was twice awarded the school’s Silver Touch Award by TouroCOM’s student government for contributing more than 50 community service hours in a “TOUCH” (Translating Osteopathic Understanding into Community Health) Program.

In the area of research, Ms. Choi has been working in a professor’s lab, helping to test the effect of a protease inhibitor found in soybeans on reducing the incidence of oral cancer. She also was one of three co-authors of an article published in the Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques last November on surgical techniques.

Ms. Choi expressed her appreciation for the grant, and singled out TouroCOM‘s Associate Director of Financial Aid Toni Daniels for nominating her for the award.  “I am so grateful for this recognition and support,” she said.

The Welch Scholars Grant is named in honor of Sterling Welch, DO, for his outstanding generosity to the American Osteopathic Foundation and his desire to support osteopathic medical students.

Ms. Choi graduated Georgetown University School of Medicine with an M.S. in physiology and biophysics in June 2013, and earned her B.S. in physiological science in 2011 at the University of California, Los Angeles.
