On Friday August 29th Harlem Mothers SAVE celebrated their 1 year anniversary in their new home on West 128th Street in Harlem.
Ms. Jackie Rowe Adams (founder and president) along with the HMS team pulled out all the stops to show their love and appreciation to supporters in the community, civic leaders, elected officials, police officers, corporate sponsors, board members, and friends. The mood was fun, loving and festive.
A live band performed for the crowd while they enjoyed food provided by local businesses and corporate sponsors. Teenagers were also present to read essays they wrote for this very special occasion.
Children played chess while speeches were made by community leaders, celebrity guests, youth organizers and supporters. Two of the mothers stood at the podium and shared their tragic personal stories about the loss of their own children due to the senseless gun violence.
One of them Ms. Shalga Hightower who started “Gift of Love” a non-profit organization named in honor of her daughter Iofemi Hightower who was killed along with her 2 friends, executions style in a Newark, NJ schoolyard in 2007.
Another mother spoke about her son who was murdered in Bedford–Stuyvesant , Brooklyn. Both mothers spoke about their activism to help stop the violence in their communities while asking others in the community to get involved in spreading the word and making a difference.
