Harlem, Now Serving Throwback Jerseys In 5001 Flavors

By Eartha Watts-Hicks

Music icons of the 90s, Harlem’s Tupac, Notorious B.I.G., Mary J. Blige, we’ve followed their careers and admired their styles. They’ve been the trendsetters of our culture. We’ve all tried to mimic their looks. And those of us who have tried may have even noticed, certain articles of fashion could not be located anywhere. Their source for fashion has been one of the music industry’s best-kept secret.

5001 Flavors is a fashion brand behind those eye-catching, signature looks and the brainchild of owners of Harlem Haberdashery, located at 245 Malcolm X Blvd, New York, NY 10027. The line began with Guy and Sharene Wood’s continued support of Sean ‘Puffy’ Combs (then former Uptown intern) and his newly launched endeavor Bad Boy Records. The 5001 Flavors “Juicy’ Jersey was custom designed for Notorious B.I.G., a/k/a Biggie Smalls, a/k/a Big Poppa, for the debut of his first music video. And through the family’s continued working relationship with Sean ‘Puffy’ Combs, Bad Boy Records, and others in music, sports, and entertainment, the brand has since remained in the spotlight with entertainers that have made history and have made 90s music historical.

Tupac Shakur sports the 5001 Flavors signature red jersey in Above the Rim. Mariah Carey, their Gold Roller-skating ensemble in Glitter. Mary J. Blige, Salt n Pepa (signature jackets and other fashions), Master P and Big Pun (in signature leather camouflage), Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs, Mase, Missy ‘Misdemeanor’ Elliot, Gina Thompson, Da Brat, Alicia Keys, Usher, NSYNC, Jalen Rose (from NBA draft pick to ESPN sports analyst), the A-list goes on and on….

Different genres, different arts and after years of operation, only a ‘key’ few are aware of the brand’s significance. Still, the pride of 5001 Flavors remains: 25+ years of growing with artists from obscurity to fame. And while the 5001 Flavors brand has served as go-to designs for award-winning fashion stylists, film, music video and television wardrobe stylists, as well as celebrities, reproductions of some these very same fashions will soon be manufactured and available to the public.
