Harlem Phone Snatchers Target Women On Subway

December 2, 2017

Patch reports that the NYPD is trying to identify three people who are part of an Uptown Manhattan phone snatching ring that targets women in subway stations, police said.

This month five women in Harlem and Washington Heights subway stations have had their cellphones grabbed out of their hand or bag by the thieves, police said.

The first robbery occurred on the night of Nov. 6 on a northbound C train traveling through Harlem. A 25-year-old woman was listening to music on her phone when an unknown individual grabbed her phone from her hand and fled the train.

Two similar phone snatchings occurred at the West 155th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue station on the nights of Nov. 14 and 16, police said.

The thieves also targeted women on D trains traveling between Manhattan and the Bronx, police said. On Nov. 23 a 28-year-old woman was on a train that was stationed in 167 Street and Grand Concourse when a person ran up and grabbed her phone, police said. On Nov. 27 a 47-year-old woman had her phone stolen while on a D train in the West 155th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard station, police said.

Three people are wanted in connection with the string of robberies, police said. Police released photos (seen above) of the suspects Friday. The first two suspects are men and the third is a woman, police said. The NYPD could not provide identifying details about the suspects other than their photos.
