Harlem Resident Dr. Sabine Marx To Host Workshop About Communicating Climate

Activists from Manhattan head to Citizens’ Climate Lobby’s 5th Annual Northeast Regional Conference on March 16-18th, 2018, being held at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA.

The conference is designed for both new and experienced citizens who want to be effective activists in addressing climate change. The Manhattan Chapter of CCL invites members of the community to join them in working towards a climate solution.

Chapter member and social scientist Dr. Sabine Marx will host a workshop at the conference titled: Tailoring communications to your audience: Understanding risk perceptions and overcoming common communication barriers. This hands-on course will cover assessing risk perception in ourselves and others, understanding underlying psychological barriers to decision making under uncertainty and key principles for targeted communication with a range of audiences.

Among other projects, Dr. Marx currently serves as Project Director, Risk Communication, at the National Center for Disaster Preparedness. She received her Ph.D. in medical history from Carnegie Mellon University, and holds a Master’s degree in Sociology and Pedagogy, with a minor in Psychology and Art Therapy from the University of Cologne, Germany.

Citizens’ Climate Lobby is a non-profit, non-partisan, grassroots advocacy organization made up of thousands of volunteers focused on national policies to address climate change. CCL takes a respectful, non-partisan approach striving towards the passage of a Carbon Fee and Dividend and has over 450 chapters across the world empowering people from all walks of life to become effective advocates for a livable world.

Conference workshops topics include understanding the basics of the carbon fee & dividend, how to work with allies who have different goals, how is the Northeast transitioning to renewable energy, updates on state carbon pricing, and more. There will also be information tables, a climate story art exhibit, evening performances, cash bar options, networking opportunities, and an electric vehicle (EV) exhibit.
