The Harlem School of Arts announced Thursday that Eric Pryor has been appointed as president of the school.
He replaces Yvette Campbell, who stepped down in June to move to the United Arab Emirates. Since 2012, Mr. Pryor had held the position of executive director of the Center for Arts Education.
During his time at the center, he used his experience to strengthen the organization’s advocacy efforts for arts-based education in public schools. The organization’s work prompted Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office to invest $92 million in expanding arts education citywide.
“I’m in a position to bring a rich array of qualified teaching artists to the children of New York City,” said Mr. Pryor. “I’d like to explore the possibility of adding public programs and making the Harlem School of the Arts a go to location. I want to expand these programs to adults as well, and do some research to get a sense of what people are looking for.”
Prior to joining the Center for Arts Education, Mr. Pryor was the executive director of the New Jersey State Museum, the largest museum in the state. During his three-year tenure, he managed an operating budget of $3 million. He revitalized the museum with the reopening of the planetarium in 2009 and the Fine Art Collection Gallery in September 2010.
Mr. Pryor started his 20-year career at the Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Corp.’s Center for Arts & Culture in Brooklyn, and served as president of the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey for seven years.
