Harlem Speaker Mark-Viverito Comments Regarding Immigration Enforcement

February 21, 2017

A statement by speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito regarding the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration Enforcement Memos:

“The DHS memos outline the reckless steps this Administration will take to fulfill the President’s campaign promise of dragnet mass deportations. The administration attempts to disguise this xenophobic and bigoted policy as a security tactic. If the Administration were actually concerned about improving public safety in our nation, it would return to immigration enforcement priorities that focus on truly violent and serious criminals. Furthermore, dragnet enforcement is an inefficient use of scarce resources that will unnecessarily rip law-abiding families apart and destabilize entire communities as well as our economy. This policy not only runs counter to our nation’s core values of acceptance and the rule of law but it will also make the nation less safe. From criminalizing all immigrants to militarizing our neighborhoods and abandoning unaccompanied minors—the Administration is taking our country down a very dangerous path. As I reiterated last week during my State of the City address—New York City will not be a pawn in that game. We will continue to do everything in our power to defend and protect the rights and safety our immigrant community.”
