These dedicated individuals volunteer their time, creativity and talent to assist their older neighbors who benefit from The Carter Burden Center programs and services.

Peter Hill, a professional musician, started the Carter Burden Center for the Aging’s first senior chorus, named the Carter Burden Singers, in July 2015. Hill commutes from New Jersey to East Harlem to host weekly practices at the Center and has dedicated his time to rehearsing and preparing for concerts. The Carter Burden Singers recently presented an impromptu concert for former President Bill Clinton.

Dr. Nancy Needle, from Downtown Manhattan, is an energetic and committed advocate for healthy aging, has turned her commitment into action as a volunteer since September 2015. She is a certified personal trainer who provides one-on-one physical therapy to seniors who are suffering from chronic pain. During her self-management program, seniors take an active role in pain treatment by engaging in proper balance, problem-solving, pacing, and decision-making.  She also educates the seniors on health and safety issues, such as proper nutrition and fall prevention. Currently, Dr. Needle is a Professor at Hunter College teaching graduate students in the field of Special Education.

Christine Allen, from East Harlem, is a long-time volunteer and member of the Center, leads the walking club, the senior advisory council, and most recently, she has taken on the challenge of volunteering during lunch service.

The Carter Burden/Leonard Covello Senior Program, located in a 28,125 square foot building in East Harlem, provides socialization, recreation and education through daily breakfast and luncheon meals, activities, day trips, computer training and holiday parties. Daily activities such as yoga, art, movies and dance classes are offered for free. Additionally, the Covello Program offers case assistance to members who need help in applying for government benefit programs, addressing landlord/tenant disputes or accessing medical care.
