Harlem Youngster Wins Police Athletic League’s Poetry Writing Contest

January 29, 2018

The Police Athletic League (PAL) held a Poetry Writing Contest for children from all five boroughs as part of the PAL ARTS After School Program. The winning poem from Manhattan, titled “My Culture, My Parents,” came from sixth grader Rashel Vargas, who attends PAL’s Polo Grounds Cornerstone. Rashel, along with the other winning poets, will have the opportunity to work with a spoken word professional and perform at the annual Poet’s Café at Affirmation Arts Gallery in Manhattan. The winners will share the stage in a celebratory performance in front of friends, family and supporters.

The PAL Poetry Writing Contest teaches poetry techniques, places an emphasis on creativity and imagination, and acknowledges the talent participants possess. The contest was open to boys and girls in first through eighth grades. The winning poems will be complied into an anthology and handed out to all the winners.

New York City’s Police Athletic League is the first and finest civilian-run PAL in the country. Founded in 1914, PAL has served the city’s young people for over 100 years. PAL provides recreational, educational, cultural and social activities to 35,000 boys and girls annually. It is also the city’s largest, independent, nonprofit youth organization.
