June 23, 2017

Moikgantsi Kgama, a Syracuse native is returning home to launch “Cocktails & Cinema,” a quarterly independent film series that highlights the global Black experience.

Kgama, a Nottingham High School and Syracuse University graduate, founded ImageNation Cinema Foundation, headquartered in Harlem.

ImageNation will present two screenings of the independent film, “Chapter & Verse,” Saturday at the Redhouse Arts Center in Syracuse. Tickets to the film include a reception with music, two complimentary drinks/soda and popcorn, a Q&A with the film’s director Jamal Joseph. Food will be sold by Soul A La Carte.

“Chapter & Verse” features actors Omari Hardwick, Loretta Divine, Selenis Leyva, Daniel Beaty and Khadim Diop. The independent film is about reformed gang leader S. Lance Ingram who returns home after serving eight years in prison, and struggles to adapt.

“When he assumes responsibility for Ty, a promising student who is pulled into a dangerous street gang, Lance risks sacrificing his ‘second chance’ at freedom so that Ty can have a ‘first chance’ at a better life,” according to the film’s synopsis.

Joseph, the director, will be Skyped in to discuss the film with participants on Saturday.

“I look forward to engaging with the audience in Syracuse,” Joseph said in a news release. “The point of this film is to emphasize love and a commitment to bettering our communities. While, the film is set in Harlem, the message is universal.”

There will be screenings at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. The reception takes place between the two shows. Music will be proved by DJ K Black. Tickets can be purchased on the ImageNation website for $10 or at the door fro $12.

Kgama launched Cocktails & Cinema to implement an event-based model for distributing high-quality smaller independent Black films.
