Ike, designed by the legendary Thomas Lamb, etc.,), one of the most recognizable figures in entertainment for the Washington Heights Dominican community will don a key thoroughfare. Hosted by Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, eminent figures of the uptown community as well as dignitaries from the Dominican Republic, celebrated the life and legacy of Freddy Beras Goico as they unveiled the new street sign at 175th Street and Broadway.

Mr. Freddy Beras Goico was an entertainer and media personality for over 30 years. He was a T.V. presenter, writer, radio personality and award-winning actor. As a child in the 1950’s, his family fled to Colombia to escape the brutal Trujillo regime in the D.R., where he would end up spending many years before returning in the 1970’s. Mr. Beras Goico was also more than a media personality however, he was a philanthropist, supporting the poor, and was known for speaking his mind against the injustices of the Balaguer regime.

To many in the Washington Heights-based Dominican community, Mr. Beras Goico was a constant and consoling presence. He brought laughter, entertainment and good spirit. His efforts of resistance to injustice are particularly uplifting and contributed to the impetus to have this important street co-named in his honor.

“It is an honor to recognize this prolific figure in Dominican culture,” said Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, sponsor of the legislation leading to the co-naming. “Freddy Beras Goico knew how to make us laugh, cry and feel uplifted. But he also taught us how to fight back against injustice stand up to corrupt and misguided power. While he is missed, we know that with this recognition, he will continue to live on in the hearts of so many who loved him.”

“Freddy Beras Goico was a treasure to our uptown community and its only right that his name will sit right outside our own treasure for entertainment,” said Congressman-Elect Adriano Espaillat. “Through his comedy, Beras Goico warmed the heart of thousands. Through his philanthropy, he fed and clothed those less fortunate. We will always remember Freddy for his great contributions to our community and I thank Council Member Rodriguez for taking this step.”

“I can think of few more deserving of a street co-naming in Washington Heights than Freddy Beras Gocio,” said Senator Elect Marisol Alcantara. “While we were sad to see him go too soon, we know that he will live on in the hearts of all who look up at this street sign. When children look up at this sign, we will gladly talk about the joy Beras Goico brought us.

“Freddy Beras Goico was a TV legend who filled the homes of many with laughter and and joy. We will always remember his work,” said Assembly Member-Elect Carmen De La Rosa. “But today we honor him for more than that too, we thank him and his family for all they have done to support this community in Washington Heights and many more in the Dominican Republic. Through his efforts, our world was left a better place.

“I want to thank Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez for this great honor and recognition for my father,” said Freddyn Beras Goico Vicioso, son of Freddy Beras Goico. “This is an important moment, not only for my family, but for all whose lives were touched by my father. It is a great feeling to know that whenever people pass this street or wait for a show at this theatre, it’s his name they will see.”

“On this memorable day, when a street in the iconic upper Manhattan area will be co-named after Freddy Beras-Goico, it is a good opportunity to celebrate the prolific work of a leader, a fighter, someone who was very spirited with a noble soul,” said the Consul General of the Dominican Republic in New York Carlos Castillo. “Freddy Beras-Goico will always be in our hearts and minds. I commend Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez and everyone who made this moment possible.”

“Freddy Beras-Goico was a remarkable entertainer and philanthropist.   He was able to accomplish very much in his lifetime and I thank Council Member Rodriguez for recognizing his achievements and honoring his memory with this co-naming” said Rudy Fuertes, President of the National Supermarket Association.
